IoT Protocol effort from Google’s Nest, will it rule?

According to this article:

“Thread will release terms for membership this year. Once members pay an annual fee, they will get access to the specification to use on a royalty-free basis.”

And I find it’s hard to believe that this protocol has something new of value to offer for IoT demand rather than gathering a few big players together and push out a standard just to stand in front of the line.
